Co-President Gan Ping Sieu on Azhar Harun's appointment as the Election Commission Chairman
Sunday, September 23, 2018
While we laud the appointment of prominent lawyer Azhar Harun as the new Election Commission chairman, it should have followed due process, including approval by Parliament. Under Promise 17 of Pakatan Harapan's manifesto, it was stated that "Appointments of members of the Election Commission will be through the process of approval by the Parliament."

If the new Federal Government is serious about institutional reforms, it should walk the talk and not turn its back on its electoral pledges. From a good governance stand point, we are fully supportive of office-bearers from important public institutions such as the EC being subject to Parliamentary approval.

But if the new Federal government starts compromising on its own standards in pushing for institutional reforms, the public will start doubting its commitment to good governance - an area which CENBET has been passionate in promoting. Besides, there is no reason to rush through Azhar's appointment as the Dewan Rakyat is to reconvene next month.

As such, we propose that a motion be tabled in Parliament to appoint Azhar as the EC chairman in

the upcoming session.
